Cricket Predictions: IPL scenario No 3 - Closed door competition

©CWM

If the IPL Governing council is still hopeful of holding the tournament anytime in or before June, a closed door competition seems not the most viable, but the only available option.

There is a considerable revenue that comes from ticket sales but one has to understand that it contributes a very small share to the entire pie. Most of the revenue comes froms the broadcasters, sponsors and advertisers.

Hence, even if the spectators are not allowed inside the stadium during the tournament, it will not have that big an impact in the entirety of the league. If the effects of the coronavirus outbreak do not decline in the near future, it is quite likely that the IPL will adopt the closed door policy.

Sporting events across the world have been affected by the ongoing pandemic. Football leagues in Europe, the NBA in USA have been suspended while the Tokyo Olympics has been pushed to 2021. All international cricket has been either suspended or cancelled. England have also pushed back the start of their season until at least May 28.

In such a state, if the IPL Governing council is still hopeful of holding the tournament anytime in or before June, a closed door competition seems not the most viable, but the only available option.
