The experienced 31-year-old put on 132 for the seventh wicket with debutant Ismat Alam (64 not out) to turn a worrying overnight situation into a potential path to victory.

Rahmat reached a well-constructed half-century off 99 balls as Afghanistan moved to 98 for five.

Rahmat found a dependable partner in the debutant Ismat Alam and the pair frustrated Zimbabwe further with a resolute stand.

Rahmat reached his third Test century off 209 balls, a milestone celebrated with muted applause as he focused on the task at hand.

By tea, Afghanistan had extended their lead to 117 runs, with the score at 203 for six.

Rahmat was unbeaten on 105, while Ismat had contributed a valuable 31.
