CSA 1 Day Cup Latest: Wins for Titans, Warriors as Boland reach play-offs

Beyers Swanepoel produced scarcely believable bowling figures to keep the Dafabet Warriors alive in the hunt for the 1 Day Cup play-offs with a superb 19-run win over World Sports Betting Western Province in Gqeberha on Wednesday night.

There was also a second successive century for Rivaldo Moonsamy as the Momentum Multiply Titans kept their semi-final hopes alive with another big win, this time over NWU Dragons, whilst Goldrush Boland became the first team through to the last four when their match against DP World Lions had to be abandoned in Johannesburg.

The big performances of the evening were delivered by Swanepoel and Moonsamy with the former registering bowling numbers of 9-4-9-4 against the defending champions.

Batting first after winning the toss at t St George's Park, the Warriors were blunted to 223 for nine thanks to four wickets from Onke Nyaku (4/34).

Jordan Hermann top-scored for the hosts with 57 (78 balls, 6 fours, 2 sixes) with 40s coming from Matthew Breetzke (45) and Senuran Muthusamy (47) – the batters struggling to find any real rhythm.

Province lost three early wickets to the exceptional Swanepoel the in their reply to slip to 24 for three in the process.

But the chase was resurrected by Edward Moore, who carried his bat for 88 (123 balls, 10 fours) and Kyle Verreynne (59 off 84 balls, 6 fours). The pair put on 107 together for the fourth wicket, but once the stand was broken, the champions faltered and were eventually dismissed for 204 in 47.4 overs.

Meanwhile at the JB Marks Oval in Potchefstroom, Moonsamy struck five sixes and 10 fours in an innings of 102 off 89 balls to help Titans to another daunting total. After their spectacular 440 for five (43 overs) in the previous game, this time they amassed 376 for six.

Dewald Brevis (57 off 32 balls, 3 fours, 5 sixes), Sibonelo Makhanya (63* off 60 balls, 3 fours, 3 sixes) and Andile Phehlukwayo (52 off 32 balls, 3 fours, 4 sixes) also played telling roles in what turned out to be a one-sided 133-run win.

In reply, the home side managed 243 all out - Janneman Malan top-scoring with 92* off 97 balls (8 fours, 1 six) and Rubin Hermann striking a breezy 63 (49 balls, 3 fours, 3 sixes).

Neil Brand was the most successful bowler with three for 56.

Wednesday’s other match between Boland and the Lions lasted only 31.5 overs as rain had the final say.

Akhona Mnyaka took two for 16 as the home side managed to reach 126 for five in that period with Wandile Makwetu hitting 47.

The latest set of results leave the Bolanders on 21 points with a game to play. The Knights, Titans and Warriors all follow on 16 points to complete the top four, though the side from Bloemfontein have a game in hand.
