Match Analysis
The Netherlands registered a famous victory as they thumped South Africa by 38 runs to win their first match in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023. The match between the teams at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium, Dharamsala was curtailed to 43 overs a side due to rain. Asked to bat first, the Netherlands posted a total of 245 for eight whereas South Africa was bundled out 207 to lose their first match of the tournament.
The Netherlands didn’t look comfortable against the new-ball attack of South Africa as they lost wickets in clusters. Vikramjit Singh fell early and soon his opening partner Max O'Dowd (18:25b, 4x4) perished too. Sybrand Engelbrecht (19:37b, 1x4, 1x6) and Teja Nidamanuru (20:25b, 3x4) tried to stay for long but couldn’t get going. The Dutch side was left tottering at 112 for six and it seemed that they would get all out for a low total. But captain Scott Edwards (78 not out: 69b, 10x4, 1x6) led the rescue charge and played magnificently well. He got vital support from Roelof van der Merwe (29:19b, 3x4, 1x6) and Aryan Dutt (23 not out:13b, 3x6) as the Netherlands posted a total of 245 runs for eight. For South Africa, Kagiso Rabada (two for 57) was the pick of the bowlers.
South Africa was off to a decent start as Quinton de Kock (20:22b, 3x4) and Temba Bavuma (16:31b, 2x4, 1x6) added 36 runs for the opening partnership. But the opening wicket brought three more wickets in no time as South Africa was tumbling at 44 for four. Heinrich Klaasen (28:28b, 4x4) tried to settle in and along with David Miller added 45 runs for the fifth wicket. Marco Jansen also tried to hang in but failed. Miller (43:52b, 4x4, 1x6) kept the hopes of fans alive but couldn’t take his team past the finishing line. Gerald Coetzee (22:23b, 2x4, 1x6) and Keshav Maharaj (40:37b, 5x4, 1x6) hit some blows in the end but Netherlands bowlers were right on the money. They castled Proteas for 207 runs to register a massive win by 38 runs.
