CWC23 Match 27: Australia prevail in tense Trans-tasman clash with New Zealand

Australia is back on track as they registered their third consecutive win in the ICC World Cup 2023.

They narrowly beat New Zealand by five runs at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium, Dharamsala. Asked to bat first, they piled up a gigantic total of 388 and then restricted the Kiwis to 383 for nine.

Australia were off to a dream start in Dharamsala. Returning from injury, Travis Head (109:67b, 10x4, 7x6) slammed a brutal ton. He was supported well by David Warner (81:65b, 5x4, 6x6) at the top as the duo smashed 175 runs for the opening partnership. Glenn Phillips brought New Zealand back in the game as he picked three quick wickets and didn’t let the Australian middle-order to settle. But the lower-order made sure that they didn’t waste the start they got. Glenn Maxwell (41:24b, 5x4, 2x6), Josh Inglis (38:28b, 4x4, 1x6) and Pat Cummins (37:14b, 2x4, 4x6) played brutal cameos and powered Australia to 388. For New Zealand, Glenn Phillips and Trent Boult picked three wickets each.

New Zealand started off pretty well in their chase but both the openers perished after decent starts. Devon Conway (28:17b, 6x4) and Will Young (32:37b, 4x4, 1x6) added 61 runs for the opening partnership. After that Daryl Mitchell (54:51b, 6x4, 1x6) and Rachin Ravindra (116:89b, 9x4, 5x6) brought New Zealand back into the game with their vital knocks. However, as the duo was back in the hut, The Kiwis lost wickets at regular intervals and were under pressure. The onus was then on James Neesham (58:39b, 3x4, 3x6) to take his team home. He kept the hopes of fans alive with his brutal hitting and a vital half-century. With 19 runs needed off the last over, he gave his best but was run out on the fifth ball. New Zealand fell short by just five runs.
