England v Bangladesh, 7th Match, ICC Cricket World Cup: Malan, Topley topple Bangladesh in a thumping win

England was up against Bangladesh in match seven of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023. The defending champion made a strong comeback after suffering a big defeat in their first game as they thumped the opposition by 137 runs.

The game took place at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium, Dharamsala, where Bangladesh won the toss and opted to field. England had a brutal outing with the bat as they posted 364 for nine whereas the Shakib Al Hasan-led side could manage just 227.

England were off to a flier as Jonny Bairstow (52:59b, 8x4) and Dawid Malan (140:107b, 16x4, 5x6) smashed 115 runs for the opening partnership. The run flow didn’t stop there as Joe Root (82:68b, 8x4, 1x6) chipped in and continued his fine form. He along with Malan stitched a 151 runs stand for the second wicket to put his side on top. After the carnage by the English top-order, Bangladesh made a strong comeback in the end and didn’t let power hitters to set in. Jos Buttler (20:10b, 1x4, 1x6) and Harry Brook (20:15b, 3x4) along with lower order made some handy contributions that took England to 364 for nine. For Bangladeshi, Shoriful Islam picked three wickets while Mahedi Hasan bagged four wickets.

Reece Topley made the new ball talk as he made Bangladesh batters look clueless. The left-arm pacer picked three wickets including Tanzid Hasan, Najmul Hossain Shanto and Shakib Al Hasan. Mehidy Hasan Miraz tried to stick in but Chris Woakes was too good for him. Senior batters Litton Das (76:66b, 7x4, 2x6) and Mushfiqur Rahim (51:64b, 4x4) tried to hold the fort. They added 72 runs for the fifth wicket but they both perished quickly. Towhid Hridoy (39:61b, 2x4) tried his best but couldn’t get going. England then wrapped up Bangladesh for 227 to win the game by 137 runs.
