ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 Match 40: West Indies enter Super Eight on a massive high

West Indies crushed Afghanistan by 104 runs in the Group C encounter of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium Gros Islet in St Lucia.

Asked to bat, West Indies piled up a massive total of 218 for five, in response, Afghanistan got bundled out for 114 on Monday. 

West Indies lost Brandon King early and were not off to a good start. But it was Johnson Charles (43:27b, 8x4) and Nicholas Pooran (98:63b, 6x4, 8x6) who did the damage after the first wicket. They took the attack to the Afghanistan bowlers and added 80 runs for the second wicket. Shai Hope (25:17b, 2x6) and skipper Rovman Powell (26:15b, 1x4, 2x6) supported Pooran well as West Indies posted a total of 218 for five on the board. For Afghanistan, Gulbadjn Naib picked two wickets. 

It wasn’t a great batting display from the Afghanistan team as they kept losing wickets right from the start. Ibrahim Zadran (38:26b, 5x4, 1x6) and Azmatullah Omarzai (23:19b, 1x4, 1x6) tried their best with the bat but couldn’t take the team further. West Indies bowlers kept putting pressure on the opposition and bundled them out for 114 to win the game by a massive margin of 104 runs. Obed McCoy was the pick of the bowlers with figures of three for 14 and along with him every other bowler was in wickets.
