Match Analysis

India took an unassailable lead of 2-0 in the three-match ODI series against England as they claimed a four wicket win at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack on Sunday. Opting to bat, England posted a total of 304, which the hosts chased with more than five overs to spare.

Ben Duckett (65:56b, 10x4) and Phil Salt (26:29b, 2x4, 1x6) took England off to a flying start with the bat and added their second consecutive fifty-plus partnership. Harry Brook (31:52b, 3x4, 1x6) and Joe Root (69:72b, 6x4) then took the onus and added 66 for the third wicket. Jos Buttler (34:35b, 2x4) also played a vital hand before Liam Livingstone (41:32b, 2x4, 2x6) finished the innings on a high as England with a total of 304. For India, Ravindra Jadeja was the pick of the bowlers with his figures of three for 35.

India had a brutal start with the bat, thanks to Rohit Sharma (119:90b, 12x4, 7x6), who returned to form and slammed a solid century. The captain, along with Shubman Gill (60:52b, 9x4, 1x6), added 136 runs for the opening stand. Virat Kohli, on his return, failed, but Shreyas Iyer (44:47b, 3x4, 1x6) continued his good touch and added 70 runs with Axar Patel (41 not out:43b, 4x4). Based on the collective effort with the bat, India chased the target with four wickets.

"It was good, really enjoyed being out there, scoring some runs for the team," Rohit said after being named player of the match in his 50th ODI as captain of India.

On his batting plans, Rohit said, "I broke it into pieces how I wanted to bat. It's a format that is longer than T20 cricket and a lot shorter than Tests. Still, you need to assess and bat according to the situation."

"We played the powerplay brilliant, we needed someone to kick on and a score around 330-350 would have been defendable," said Buttler.

On the final match in Ahmedabad on Wednesday and the following Champions Trophy plans, Buttler said, "Just keep making steps in the right direction, the results are not there but we need to keep going and be positive."
