Australia declared on 556/9 after a sensational batting performance, Usman Khawaja (160) leading the way with a huge century. Alex Carey (93) and Steve Smith (72) bolstered the score leaving Pakistan an uphill battle.
Things didn't start well for Pakistan, a run-out and Nathan Lyon bowling leaving them on 45/2 after 20 overs. Mitchell Starc (3/29) continued to lay waste to the Pakistan batting line-up, taking the wickets of Azhar Ali and Fawad Alam before getting Sajid Khan later in the innings.
Mitchell Swepson (2/32) took some crucial wickets, that of Babar Azam (36) and the final wicket of Shaheen Afridi (19). Pakistan finished their 1st innings on 148/10, meaning it would take a world class effort to get anywhere near Australia's total, if asked to bat again.
However, Australia opted to bat and closed the day on 88/1 with a lead of 489 runs.
