Scotts of Thrapston starts work on second pavilion for Oxfordshire cricket club

A Northamptonshire company has started work on a much-anticipated second pavilion for a long-established cricket club located near Banbury.

Scotts of Thrapston, specialists in the manufacture and installation of bespoke timber framed buildings, is behind the new building being created for Cropredy Cricket Club.

The club, based in Williamscot Road, was formed in 1927 and has been based at its current home since 1995. It boasts excellent facilities, including a purpose-built score box, practice nets, full pitch covers and site screens.

However, the club is keen to continue to meet huge demand for the game in the area, and is keen to provide a second pavilion and pitch.

Han van Reen, spokesman for the club, said: “This is the biggest single project in the club’s history - to build a new second ground and pavilion adjacent to the current ground. We are delighted that work is now under way and are really looking forward to the finished results and what it will mean for the club.”

Richard Jarvis, spokesman for Scotts of Thrapston, said: “Our in-house architect is working closely with the cricket club to offer a complete ‘turnkey’ service from concept to completion. In the end, Scotts will have designed, engineered, manufactured and installed the building to meet the required deadlines.”

After a lengthy two-year planning process and continued in-depth consultation with Cherwell District Council, full planning permission was granted in January 2018. Working closely with consulting structural engineers, M&E engineers and energy assessors, Scotts aims to produce a high-performing tailor-made building for the club.

The new building will include a club room, with kitchen and bar facilities, new changing rooms with showers, an umpire and officials’ changing room and large raised verandah for watching the game in play.

The building is designed as a ‘hybrid’, using a traditional panelised timber frame with a cantilevered glulam beam supporting the main roof structure in the club room, to create a natural aesthetic and wow factor.

The superstructure is being manufactured in-house at Scotts’ factory in Thrapston. It will be delivered to the Cropredy grounds in kit form and craned in place on site. All machining and plate connections will be carried out in-house by Scotts’ joiners to millimetre accuracy prior to assembly.
