Afghanistan made a fine start to Asia Cup 2022 with an impressive eight wicket win over Sri Lanka in the opening game of the tournament at the Dubai International Stadium on Saturday night.

In a Group B encounter, Sri Lanka after being asked to bat were bowled out for 105 in 19.4 overs and in response Afghanistan chased down the score in 10.1 overs to finish on 106 for two.

Earlier, Sri Lanka were reduced to five for three in the first three overs. Then it took a 44 run fourth wicket stand between Bhanuka Rajapaksa (38) and Danushka Gunathilaka to revive the innings. Then the innings collapsed without a fight as they were then reduced to 75 for nine in 15 overs. For the final wicket, Chamika Karunaratne (31) added 30 runs with Dilshan Madushanka to stretch the score. Sri Lanka ended on 105 in 19.4 overs. For Afghanistan the best bowlers were Fazalhaq Farooqi (3-11), Mujeeb ur Rahman (2-24) and Mohammad Nabi (2-14).

In their response, Afghanistan got off to a flying start as the openers Hazratullah Zazai (37: 28b, 5x4, 6x1) and Rahmanullah Gurbaz (40: 18b, 3x4, 4x6) added 83 in just 6.1 overs. Thereafter, the chase was simple as Zazai applied finishing touches. In the end Afghanistan chased down the target in 10.1 overs to finish on 106 for two.
