Match Summary
England 170/10 (22 ov)
South Africa 399/7 (50 ov)
South Africa won by 229 runs.
The game between two titans was also the 20th game and took place at iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Saturday. Asked to bat first, the Proteas piled a gigantic total of 399 for seven whereas defending champions were bundled out for 170.
South Africa had a torrid start with the they lost Quinton de Kock lost his wicket on the second ball of the game. But after him, Reeza Hendricks (85:75b, 9x4, 3x6) and Rassie van der Dussen (60:61b, 8x4) took England bowlers to the cleaners and asserted their authority. They added 121 runs for the second wicket before Aiden Markram (42:44b, 4x4) and Heinrich Klaasen added 69 runs for the fourth wicket. Once stand-in skipper Markram was back in the hut, it was all about Klaasen (109:67b, 12x4, 4x6). The keeper-batter slammed a brutal century and put on a great show. He was supported well by Marco Jansen (75 not out: 42b, 3x4, 6x6) as South Africa racked up a massive total of 399 for seven on the board. Adil Rashid was the pick of the bowlers with his figures of two for 60.
England was off to the bizarre start as pressure was visible on each batter. South African pacers were all over them and left them in tatters at 68 for four. No batter from the top six managed to cross the 20-run mark with Harry Brook (17:25b, 2x4, 1x6) being the top run-scorer from the specialist batters. Mark Wood (43 not out:17b, 2x4, 5x7) entertained the crowd with some brutal hitting in the end. But South Africa was too good on the day as they bundled out the defending champions for 170 to win the game by 229 runs.
