CWC 2023 Match 21 India vs New Zealand: India end 20 year New Zealand curse in ICC events

India ended the New Zealand curse as they for the first time since 2003 defeated them in senior ICC men's events. The Men in Blue thumped Black Caps by four  wickets to register their fifth consecutive win of the tournament.

Match Analysis

The match took place at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium, Dharamsala, where the atmosphere was vibrant. Asked to bat first, New Zealand posted 273 whereas India chased the target in 48 overs.

New Zealand didn’t have the kind of start they wanted as Devon Conway bagged a nine-ball duck and few overs later Will Young (17:27b, 3x4) perished too. Indian bowlers kept things tight in the powerplay as they bowled impeccable lines and lengths and restricted run flow as well. But Rachin Ravindra (75:87b, 6x4, 1x6) and Daryl Mitchell (130: 127b, 9x4, 5x6) batted their heart out and added 159 runs for the third wicket. India had no answers during that phase but after that they pulled drastically well. Glenn Phillips (23:26b, 1x6) tried to up the ante but couldn’t get going. Bowlers chipped in with wickets a crucial junctures and made sure that they don’t let New Zealand go past 300. Mohammed Shami bagged five wickets on his return as hosts bundled out Kiwis for 273.

India were off the flying start as Rohit Sharma (46:40b, 4x4, 4x6) and Shubman Gill (26:31b, 5x4) came out with attacking mindset and took on the bowlers. They added 71 runs for the opening stand but perished in no time. Virat Kohli then decent had partnership Shreyas Iyer (33:29b, 6x4) and KL Rahul (27:35b, 3x4) but the middle order batters couldn’t cash on the start they got. Suryakumar Yadav ended up getting run out and India came under bit of pressure. But Kohli (95: 104b, 8x4, 2x6) yet again stood tall and along with Ravindra Jadeja added 78 runs for the sixth wicket. In the end India overhauled the target in 48 overs to finish on 274 for six.
