CWC23 Match 28: Netherlands hand Bangladesh a shock defeat

Netherlands registered their second win of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 as they thumped Bangladesh by a margin of 87 runs. The 28th match of the tournament took place at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Batting first, after winning the toss, the Dutch team were bundled out for 229. With the ball though they were on the top as the Dutch bundled out Bangladesh for just 142.

The Netherlands were off to a disappointing start as they lost both the openers quickly. But after that, Wesley Barresi (41:41b, 8x4) steadied the innings but the Dutch side yet again came under pressure as they were left tottering at 63 for four. However, after that skipper, Scott Edwards (68:89b, 6x4) led from the front and played vital innings. He got support from Sybrand Engelbrecht (35:61b, 3x4) and Logan van Beek (23 not out:16b, 2x4, 1x6) as the Netherlands powered themselves to 229. For Bangladesh, every bowler barring Mehidy Hasan picked a wicket.

Bangladesh had a torrid outing with the bat as the Netherlands were all over them. They had the batting team in totters at 69 for five. Mehidy Hasan Miraz (35:40b, 5x4, 1x6) looked settled from the top five. Mahmudullah (20:41b, 2x4) tried to keep his side in the game but the quality of the Netherlands was spot on with the ball. They bundled out the opposition for 142 runs and clinched the game by 87 runs. Paul van Meekeren was the pick of the bowlers with his figures of four for 23.
