CWC23 Match 25: England demolished yet again by Sri Lanka at an ODI World Cup

Defending champion England were blown away by Sri Lanka in match 25 of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023.

They faced an eight-wicket thrashing at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru. England won the toss and batted first but it was a bizarre outing for them as they were bundled out for just 156. Sri Lanka comfortably chased the target inside 25 overs.

England had a decent start with the bat as Jonny Bairstow (30:31b, 3x4) and Dawid Malan (28:25b, 6x4) added 45 runs for the opening stand. But after that, it triggered a collapse as they lost wickets in clusters after that. Ben Stokes (43: 73b, 6x4) tried to pull his team out of pressure but didn’t get the desired support and perished. A terrific bowling by Sri Lanka bundled the defending champions for just 156. Lahiru Kumara picked three wickets whereas Kasun Rajitha and Angelo Mathews bagged two scalps each.

David Willey kept England in the game with two wickets up front but he didn’t get support from others. Sri Lanka batter Pathum Nissanka (77 not out: 83b, 7x4, 2x6) and Sadeera Samarawickrama (65 not out: 54b, 7x4, 1x6) slammed vital half-centuries and took their team to a comfortable eight-wicket victory.
