South Africa 212/10 (49.4 ov)
Australia 215/7 (47.2 ov)
Result - Australia won by 3 wickets
The second semi-final of the tournament took place at the iconic Eden Gardens and it was a low-scoring thriller. Opting to bat first, South Africa were bundled out for just 212. Australia with the bat came under a lot of pressure but they held their nerves and won the game inside 48 overs.
South Africa was off to a torrid start with the bat as they had no answers to the impeccable lines and lengths bowled by Australian pacers. The Proteas were left tottering at 24 for four and it didn’t seem that they would get past 150 runs. But Heinrich Klaasen (47:48b, 4x4, 2x6) and David Miller (101:116b, 8x4, 5x6) added 95 runs to steady the ship. Gerald Coetzee (19:39b, 2x4) supported Miller well as South Africa ended with 212 on the board.
Australia was off to a flying start in the chase as David Warner (29:18b, 1x4, 4x6) and Travis Head (62:48b, 9x4, 2x6) added 60 runs in no time. However, South Africa pulled back things incredibly well. They chipped in with wickets at regular intervals and removed both the openers along with Mitchell Starc for 106.
Marnus Labuschagne (18:31b, 2x4) and Steve Smith (30:62b, 2x4) played vital hands but Proteas spinners chipped in and reduced Australia to 174 for six. Jos Inglis (28:49b, 3x4) tried to hold the fort but Gerald Coetzee sent him packing. Mitchell Starc (14:29b, 2x4) and Pat Cummins (16:38b, 2x4) in the end stuck in and took the team home with three wickets in hand.
