Pitch Report:
As most know, Eden Gardens is usually a very friendly batting pitch, with short boundaries and a quick outfield — the batsmen definitely get value for their shots. Last year, the average first-innings score was 209 across seven matches, and this year that figure has risen to 212, with scores of 174/8, 200/6, and 238/3.
Trends suggest plenty of 4s in the powerplay (52.5% of all runs in the PP were 4s last season), followed by a surge of 6s at the back end. Occasionally, KKR do produce a turning wicket to aid the duo of Chakravarthy and Narine — but I doubt this will be the game to adopt that pitch strategy, given Kishore and Rashid Khan are in the opposition lineup.
GT Are Platform Setters
As we've all seen by now, Gujarat's side is built around extremely consistent run-scorers in their top three who keep wickets in hand for the latter stages of the innings. That’s when either they or the less consistent but more powerful hitters, such as Rutherford and Tewatia, can finish in a flurry.
Because of this, GT are happy to take less risk early. When you take less risk with good players — which Sudharsan and Gill definitely are — they often score plenty. This is evident in their first-wicket stand average of 47.7 this season. Compare that to KKR's average of just 21.3 — with an out-of-form de Kock and a pinch-hitter in Narine — and we simply have to back GT Highest Opening Partnership at 1.80 .
KKR’s Opening Stand Dominoes
In the past, when teams lost an early wicket, the remaining opener might have batted conservatively for a few overs. That approach has gone out the window. Now, batters often increase intent immediately after a wicket — especially in this KKR side.
It’s little surprise then, that in 3 out of the 6 games de Kock and Narine have opened together, when one has failed to reach double figures, they both have. With a market that would have landed 50% of the time this season, we can’t ignore de Kock and Narine both under 10 runs at 11.00
One Set, Go Big!
Because of GT's strategy to set a platform and keep wickets in hand, at least one of their batters has reached 60 in all seven matches this season. Their highest individual scores have been 74, 63, 73, 61, 82, 60, and 97.
On such a batting-friendly ground with small boundaries, we're happy to take Over 62.5 Highest GT Individual Score at 1.85 — it has landed in 5 out of 7 games so far. The only two that failed? 60 and 61!
We also can't understand how the same market is pitched just two runs lower for KKR — who have only had one player cross 61 in any match this season. Therefore, we also recommend GT Top Runscorer in the Match at 1.91 as a play too.
Raghuvanshi to Make It 3
Picking a top KKR batter can be tricky due to the volatile nature of their lineup. That said, Raghuvanshi has already claimed top scorer twice this year and narrowly missed out with a well-made 50 in Match 15.
KKR tend to go either massive or bust, and Raghuvanshi is a player who can win top bat in either scenario — something not many in their lineup can claim. Despite his promotion to No. 4 last time out, where he won top bat, bookmakers haven’t adjusted his odds — so we can still get Raghuvanshi Top KKR Bat at 6.50
