New Zealand batter Tom Latham brought up his highest ODI score of 145 not out in the 1st ODI against India to take the Player of the Match award and guide his team to a comfortable 7-wicket victory.

India batted first at the unique Eden Park in Auckland and posted 306 from their 50 overs. The score actually flattered to deceive as given the dimensions of the ground and the true batting surface, 350 was more of a par total.

Despite some good bowling from the inexperienced Indian attack, which had two bowlers making their ODI debuts in Arshdeep Singh and Umran Malik and Washington Sundar still very young in his international career, India were successful in making a match out of it.

As it turned out, Tom Latham took charge and ended the game with a flurry of boundaries after having hovered around 100% strike rate for most of the innings. Latham finally cut loose towards the back end to record his highest ODI score of 145 not out while going at a strike rate of almost 140 in one day internationals.

The New Zealand batter stitched together an unbeaten partnership of 221 for the fourth wicket with Kane Williamson which is the second-highest and one of only two 200 + partnerships for the 4th wicket or lower in ODI chases, next only to the unbeaten 226 run partnership between Eoin Morgan and Ravi Bopara in Dublin back in 2013.

The batter is highly underrated and is among the best middle order batters in white ball cricket and among the best openers in Test cricket -- two roles that not many take with Latham's level of alacrity in world cricket.
