CWC23 Match 35: Fakhar stands tall amidst rains to win it for Pakistan

Pakistan beat New Zealand by 21 runs via the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method to keep themselves alive in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023.

The match at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru was marred by rain and was called off midway. Pakistan won the toss and opted to field first. New Zealand batted staggeringly well and ended with 401 for six. In the chase, Pakistan was 200 for one before rain played its part.

New Zealand were off to a decent start as they had 68 runs in the opening start before Devon Conway (36:39b, 6x4) perished. After that, it was all about Rachin Ravindra (108:94b, 15x4, 1x6) and Kane Williamson (95:79b, 10x4, 2x6). They batted magnificently well and added 180 runs of the second wicket. Their partnership set a great tone for New Zealand and put Pakistan under pressure. Daryl Mitchell (29:18b, 4x4, 1x6), and Mark Chapman (39:27b, 7x4) played great hands in the middle. Glenn Phillips (41:25b, 4x4, 2x6) and Mitchell Santner (26 not out: 17b, 2x6) finished the innings on a high. Based on a combined batting effort, New Zealand posted a mammoth total of 401 for six on the board. For Pakistan, Mohammad Wasim Jr was the pick of the bowlers with his figures of three for 60.

Pakistan lost Abdullah Shafique early. But after that, Fakhar Zaman (128 not out: 81b, 8x4, 11x6) was at his brutal best and made sure that he kept his team in the chase. He brought up a lightning ton and was well supported by Babar Azam (66 not out:63b, 6x4, 3x6). Their quick knocks made sure that Pakistan kept the run rate high. Rain played its part after that but thanks to the DLS method and quick batting by Fakhar, Pakistan won by 21 runs.
