Earlier, Australia added a further 150 runs to their overnight total of 384-4, losing Joe Burns for 180. Kurtis Patterson then went on to score 114* (his maiden Test hundred) and, in partnership with skipper Tim Paine 45*, added another 130 runs before Australia declared.
At the Close, Sri Lanka were in deep trouble, trailing Australia by 411 runs with 7 wickets remaining in their 1st innings.
