Aiden Markram became the batter with the fastest ton in ODI World Cup cricket with a sensational 49-ball century against Sri Lanka.

He overtook the previous fastest hundred in the 50-over WC by Ireland's Kevin O'Brien, which had come off 50 balls against England in the 2011 World Cup.

Markram was one of three centurions in the South African innings as they scored a mammoth 428-5 from their 50 overs, the highest team total in WC history, in the 4th match of the ongoing ODI World Cup at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, in New Delhi on Saturday, October 7.

South Africa's score of 428-5 also broke the record for the highest match aggregate in the ODI World Cup with the score of both teams adding to a massive 754 runs. Another record which went down was that of the most boundaries hit in an ODI World Cup match, with both teams contributing 105 fours in the match.

Quinton de de Kock (100 off 84 balls) and Rassie van der Dussen (108 off 110 balls) also had memorable outings as the Proteas bagged a huge 102-run win to give a big boost to their net run rate early doors in the World Cup.

While they were not odds-on favourites to make the semis at the beginning of the World Cup, things might begin to change after their massive win, especially now that both England and Australia have lost their WC openers by big margins.
